Goodbye Kalekh

Kalekh of Seppala 28 Nov 2008 ~ 9 Feb 2021

On Tuesday, we lost our dear boy Kalekh.

The air of sadness that seems to perpetually hang over us has deepened again, as we are forced to deal with the passing of another of our beloved dogs. Hampered by arthritis, Kalekh retired early and passed his time by trying to become the all -time abscess creating record holder. As a sled dog, he was a wonderful leader, unless we stopped, in which case he felt it was his duty to check on all the dogs behind him. As a house dog, he was the perfect gentleman. He worked out how to utilize the dog tunnel and apart from one minor indiscretion with a Christmas decoration, he was a delight to be around. Stricken by osteosarcoma, his mobility declined rapidly, and diagnosed with a mass in his stomach, combined with a mysterious affliction to one of his rear legs, we knew our time with him was limited.

We are never ready to say goodbye, even when we know it is coming. Nothing prepares you for that moment, and nothing helps ease the pain and grief.

In the winter sun.

Like many of our dogs, Kalekh came to us from Seppala Kennels in Manitoba, but slightly circuitously. He had a winter at a large touring kennel in Alberta and joined us from there. He reunited with his brother, Kazek, and his sister Kalinka here. He will be reunited with them again now at the Rainbow Bridge, as they have both already passed on.

Kalekh and Kalekh

Goodbye my dear Kal, may you get to chew grass and sticks without consequence for all eternity.
